Eric Boulanger

Founder | The Bakery

Founder of The Bakery, as well as an accomplished professional studio violinist, Eric Boulanger is the rare professional whose exceptional skill set regularly takes him from the studio to the stage. A classically trained violinist since the age of three, with over two decades of professional experience, Eric has trained at such renowned institutions as The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music and Tanglewood. Working behind the console, Eric has mastered GRAMMY-winning/nominated projects including work with Green Day, Hozier, Selena Gomez, Colbie Caillat, OneRepublic, Eric Burdon, Imagine Dragons, Neil Young, The Plain White T’s, Chris Botti, Amos Lee, Serena Ryder, The Doors, Olivia Newton-John, Rufus Wainwright, and Sarah Jarosz, among others. In 2015, Eric opened mastering facility The Bakery, on the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City, CA. Good vibes surrounded The Bakery’s inception, with Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song” going to number one and earning a Platinum certification.
Outside of his studio, Eric has been a leader of the Producers & Engineers Wing of The Recording Academy while serving as a member of its Steering Committee. He also was the first Mastering Engineer to master a Mastered for iTunes (MFiT) release (Colbie Caillat’s “All of You”) – the MFiT initiative dramatically improved the quality and care taken in delivering masters for digital distribution.
Proving the efficacy of internship programs in the recording industry, Eric’s professional career began when he was named the first-ever intern in the illustrious history of Capitol Studios in Hollywood, California. While at Capitol, Eric had the great opportunity to work with esteemed GRAMMY-winning producer/engineer Al Schmitt, who was pivotal in mentoring and guiding Eric toward joining The Mastering Lab, the world’s first independent mastering studio, founded by the late legendary GRAMMY-winning mastering engineer Doug Sax. A protege of Maestro Sax, Eric not only had the honor of being trained by Sax, he was also responsible for the design and upkeep of the entire studio. In 2009, when it was decided to resurrect vinyl mastering, Eric designed and built The Mastering Lab’s Ojai vinyl mastering room, complete with a custom high-resolution passive console. The experience and knowledge from his time at The Mastering Lab and with Doug Sax is the soul that lives on in The Bakery’s unique, custom-design (patent-pending) digital vinyl cutting system, and general musical approach.
Eric holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2007. A distinguished scholar while at Carnegie Mellon, Eric was awarded the Bose Corporation Research Award, the Electrical & Computer Engineering Honors Society Research Award presented by Lockheed Martin, and the Sigma XI Scientific Research Award. Eric’s violin studies were under the tutelage of Oscar Ravina, legendary veteran of the New York Philharmonic. He also studied under Alexander Markov, acclaimed soloist and recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant. Eric’s depth of talent, exceptional technique, and appreciation for all musical genres have made him a sought-after violinist. Eric’s performances and recordings range from orchestral and chamber music, Broadway musicals, contemporary pop music, and film/television scores. Eric continues to strive for excellence as both a violinist and engineer, ceaselessly cultivating the synergy that stems from being a consummate performer and an accomplished engineer of music.
